Here Colin Fisher (Rohan’s Chairman) shares his tale of Mayrhofen August 2014:

Nicholas-Fisher-

Nicholas Fisher, Colin’s Son

“I spent last week with twenty Rohan customers in Mayrhofen in the Austrian Alps.

Though I have walked in the Pyrenees and the Andes I have never walked in the Alps before.

It was wonderful.

It rained pretty constantly but my Elites stood up to it well so I was able to enjoy the glimpses of the peaks as the clouds parted.

But the best was walking through wild flower meadows and up stony tracks to “huts” where we could eat our lunch.

If you have never seen an Austrian alpine hut I can recommend them – pea soup with Wurstel, cheese made in the back room, proper Austrian coffee – bliss.

I had to walk defensively because I have a mild knee problem but our fourteen year old son, Nicholas, bounded ahead like a gazelle. (He ended the week with twenty adopted parents.)

It made me realise how demanding this sort of walking is – ten miles starting at five thousand feet and going up and down another fifteen hundred in the rain puts a lot of pressure on breathability particularly if you sweat like I do.

Even Sarah, my wife, younger and fitter than me, glowed a little. Stubborn as I am I’ve even decided to learn to walk with poles.

The week was organised by HF Holidays on our behalf and, apart from Lufthansa’s inability to handle check-in, the organisation was impeccable.

The Hotel Waldheim is family run and their ability to cope with the demands of the group was amazing. The walk leaders, Kate, Bill and Michael were all highly experienced and tuned in to the different needs of the group very quickly.

The leaders and I went to a lecture given by Peter Habeler, who lives in Mayrhofen, about his ascent of Everest without oxygen assistance in our kit.

My German is, at best tuned to the menu rather than a lecture but he was inspirational.

I am looking forward to the weekend event on Dartmoor in November. (The fact that I am looking forward to a weekend on Dartmoor in November says it all about my faith in HF).

Best of all was the group.

I am very lucky as Chairman of Rohan that I can spend time with our customers.

They were, without exception, warm, witty and fun. Sarah, Nicholas and I had a great time and I think they did too. Our thanks go to you all.”

Thank you Colin for sharing your tale.
